Peter M Clarke with Organic Forms

Biography / CV of Peter M Clarke

Born in London in 1953, Peter spent several years in the fashion industry before the decline in clothing manufacture in Britain led to redundancy. Changing direction, Peter decided to study art and undertook a foundation course in Art and Design at Sir John Cass College, London, followed by a degree course at Camberwell College of Art, London, While there, Peter was invited to create 3 sculptures for the sensory garden of a school in Walton on Thames, a commission that was to ignite a passion for designing and making garden sculpture.

Peter now has a studio/workshop in a converted stable block on a farm in Kent, surrounded by horses, hens and peacocks. Working with metals and especially copper because of its sensitivity to the texturing process, his pieces are made by hand, usually by drawing freehand directly onto the metal. Cut shapes are heated to a temperature where the material is malleable and can be textured and hammered into shape.

The inspiration for Peter`s work comes from nature, and many of his textures and finishes are derived from organic surfaces of stem, leaf, pod, shell or bark. Generally suitable for siting in soil or in water, many of Peter`s outdoor pieces are finely balanced to allow for gentle movement as they sway in the wind.

Artist Statement of Peter M Clarke

I look to the organic for form, colour and texture, exploring the characteristics of plant forms, of rocks and shells, of the earth, of the universe.

Customer comment on 'Dog Fox' by Tessa Hayward
Dear Peter, Enclosed is photo of my lovely fox, placed into an area which I`m developing as a small bluebell and white birch woodland. I`m absolutely delighted with the sculpture! Would you please pass a copy on to Tessa (Hayward), with my thanks and very best wishes. Jenny
